resignation of general david petraeus. u.s. officials now telling nbc news that e-mails between general petraeus and paula broadwell were in fact indicative of an extramarital affair. broadwell the biographer who had writer a book. joining me john harwood, chief washington correspondent for cnbc. good to see you. >> hey, craig. >> what do we know at this point about the fbi investigation? >> well, not all that much. but what we do know is that the investigation began into e-mails that paula broadwell was sending to another woman. so it started away from petraeus, and then led to petraeus because of the nature of his exchanges with paula broadwell. don't know whether that fbi investigation is going to produce a prosecution or anything further. but that's how it appears to have started. it doesn't appear that this has anything to do with other extraneous issues that people have talked about, benghazi or any big geopolitical thing. it seems to be extremely personal. >> what has been the reaction from the white house? and what are you hearing from people on the hill? >> well, i think everyb

the investigation into david petraeus and why it was kept secret until after the election. let's begun with john allen now finds himself in the middle of this growing scandal. he currently sios at commander of nato forces in afghanistan. and jill kelly said that she had been receiving bizarre comments from paula broadwell. what did the e-mails say? they characterize the messages as, quote, flirtatious in nature and inappropriate. we have just learned that two u.s. officials tell fox that it was more than just flirting. they describe them as sexually split and equivalent of phone sex over e-mail. he denies it but something is not adding up. we heard from the father of broadwell. this is something else entirely and the truth will come out. there is a lot more than meets the eye. if we are to believe the story we are told all of this started because paula broadwell sent anonymous e-mails to kelly. it's like cat ties stuff, phrases who do you think you are? you parade around the base. you need to take it down a notch. none of them reportedly referenced violence but the f.b.i. launched a full investi

'll be right back. >>> welcome back to "hardball." david petraeus' resignation last friday came as a shock to many in washington. petraeus stepped down after news of an extramarital affair broke out. here is what we know about the time line of how the events unfolded. back in early june the fbi began investigating what it described as menacing e-mails sent anonymously to a woman close to petraeus. well, the e-mails allegedly came from paula broadwell, who the fbi later discovered was having an affair with the cia director. well, the fbi wrapped its investigation on november 2nd after it interviewed petraeus and broadwell. but "the new york times" reports the fbi concluded there was no evidence petraeus committed any crime or breached any security problem. on election day the fbi notified james clapper, he's the director of national intelligence, about the investigation. the next day he told people in the white house. that was clapper. but the president wasn't informed until the following day, november 8th. lawmakers have expressed anger they weren't informed earlier about the investigation

now. retired general david petraeus resigned on friday after admitting an affair. the other woman is again paula broadwell, who co-wrote his biography, the book "all in the education of general petraeus." this past spring as we mentioned, broadwell sent at the time anonymous harassing e-mails to jill kelley. kelley talked to her fbi friend launching the investigation. turns out the initial agent on the case, according to the "wall street journal," was removed from the case when he reportedly became obsessed with the case and even sent shirtless photos of himself to miss kelley. it gets stranger. new today, we have learned kelley also received some inappropriately flirtatious e-mails, self-described from four star marine general john allen. he denies an extramarital affair with kelley and insists he did nothing wrong. but the pentagon is investigating thousands of documents and e-mails, some of them were apparently flirtatious. turns out both allen and petraeus stepped in to help kelley's twin sister, natalie, in a custody battle with her ex-husband. both generals wrote letters on
